"Milk" stars the Academy Award winner Sean Penn and is directed by Academy Award nominee Gus Van Sant. In anticipation of the media coverage surrounding the November premiere, we released a resource kit for journalists who are reporting on the film to ensure fair and accurate coverage of Harvey Milk's life.
The biopic chronicles the advocacy work of Harvey Milk, who was the first openly gay man to be voted into major public office in America when, in 1977, he was elected to the San Francisco Board of Supervisors. His victory was not just a victory for gay rights; he forged coalitions across the political spectrum and was responsible for passing a gay rights ordinance.
Harvey Milk changed the very nature of what it means to be a fighter for human rights and became, before his untimely assassination in 1978, a pioneer in the gay rights movement. "Milk" was filmed on location in San Francisco from an original screenplay by Dustin Lance Black and produced by Academy Award winners Dan Jinks and Bruce Cohen.
We encourage you to support GLAAD by participating in the auction and to see "Milk" when it premieres on November 26 (in select cities) and December 5 and 12 (in additional cities).
